Langkawi, an island northwest of Malaysia, that borders Thailand is one of the friendliest places I’ve been so far. Everyone seems to be happy and helpful. Haven’t had one single bad thing happen to me! I had planned to stay for 2 nights and ended up spending a week there. There is NO party at night and people seem to disappear everywhere after 10pm. So, don’t expect to dance through the nights – it’s not going to happen!

It’s a duty free island and though you can see duty free signs everywhere, it’s mainly chocolate,  cigarettes and booze you save a lot of money on – electronics are NOT cheaper for example.

From Koh Lipe it’s 900 THB per speed boat ferry and takes around 1,5 hours.

Hostel prices range between 5 and 12 Euros, Local food is cheap. You can be full for 5 MYR at the food market.

HIT THE BEACH – BITCH!

Tanjung Rhu

Sorry – it rhymed!

Forget Cenang Beach on Langkawi – its not only ugly, it’s been flooded with Chinese umbrella people. You can ride banana boats or fly up in the air for 13 minutes and pay around 30 Dollars for that! Don’t be one of these people – just avoid it. The only thing exciting you’ll find there for sure are jellyfish that’ll sting your balls.

Tanjung Rhu

The beach on the pictures is Tanjung Rhu and it’s the best you can go to in my opinion. Cenang beach hurt my eyes. The streetfood at Tanjung Rhu is cheap and tasty, there’s some shade between the trees and it’s not crowded. Check out the pictures and decide for yourself 🙂

I’ll include a map at the end of the article where you can find the location.

FLOAT UP TO SKYBRIDGE

SkyBridge Langkawi

You can take a cable car up to SkyBridge. It’s 55 MYR in total (50 to get up with two cable cars and 5 extra to enter SkyBridge. you can reach the SkyBridge by either walking insanely long and exhausting stairs (it’s hot up there!) or take an elevator for another 15 MYR (pffff) and actually wait for over 30 minutes to get in. Up to you.

I just went up there to get a photo for you guys, but it bored me to hell.

Incuded in the ticket price is the 3D Art Museum by the way. It’s totally worth checking out – even if you have to leave your shoes at the front desk.

MERGE INTO 3D ART

The 3D Art museum at the SkyBridge is a must do, if you like to take funny pictures. Walls are painted and you can spend hours merging into the photos. If you skip this on and decide to wait outside for your friends, consider “we”ll be back in 30 minutes” as a massive lie!

FEAR YOUR LIFE AT SKYTREX

Skytrex langkawi

There’s an adventure climbing park on the island, I have not been to. Hahahaha. I actually did plan on taking some pictures of me adventurously climbing high up in the trees – definitely NOT fearing my life. But I ended up in a hammock instead.

Nonetheless I drove past and it looked quite nice! The Extreme Track is 700m long and has a lot to offer. Check out their page and make sure to book online!

Entry fee is 65 MYR online only and 80 MYR if you buy it there. There are time slots, you need to keep in mind to enter. During the week it’s 9am – 10.30am – 1.30pm and 3pm … and you need to be there 15 minutes in advance.

Check the website for more information.for more information.

The staff seems to be professional and the pictures of the trek looked nice and my hammock was extremely comfortable!

OVEREAT AT A FOOD MARKET

Street Market Langkawi

Food markets happen in Langkawi every day on different locations. I went to three and they were more or less the same. Ask the locals where to go when and prepare to be stuffed!

WATCH A SUNSET ON GUNUNG RAYA

Langkawi sunset gunung raia

Fuel up your scooter (4MYR per full tank, Rent a scooter: Don’t pay more than 25 MYR per day) and head to Gunung Raya. Sun sets at 7.30pm and you want to be there at 6.30, pick a comfortable place on one of the big rocks and enjoy the view. If it’s not cloudy (check your weather app!), you can even see Thailand. It’s beautiful! plan in 40 Minutes to get there from Cenang beach.

Remember to get some gas! I did not, missed the sunrise and realized I could have slept until 11am instead.

HANG OUT AT KASBAH

Kasbah Langkawi

Talking about food markets, there’s one around the corner of Kasbah hostel. You can actually take a basket from the hostel, get your food round the corner and eat at the hostel without paying extra.

This place has some healthy (also vegan) food options and it’s easy to meet new people or just hang out on the pillows. I loved it there and prolonged my 2 nights stay to a week, hahaha.

Try out the swinging beds downstairs and sleep like a baby. It’s actually a little bit cooler downstairs than upstairs, so I guess that’s the better option. Price is around 30 MYR per night, which is not even 7 Euros!

There’s also a gym next to the hostel (5MYR/day) if you want to do some weightlifting. Muay Thai curses start every day at 5pm (2hrs hardcore punishment – believe me, I’ve heard the screaming…)

SNEAK INTO RESORTS

Craving a pool? Sneak into one of the resorts at the beach and enjoy some fresh cold water. You can climb over the fence on most places – some of them even have slides, hahaha.

HEAD OVER TO KOH LIPE
